ABSTRACT
“Social Media against Social Oppression” (S.M.A.S.O.) is a training course that will bring
together 24 among youth project leaders, youth workers, project advisers, supervisors and
others active in the youth field, from Italy, Sweden, Turkey and Lithuania. Together with 3
among trainers and speakers and 2 volunteers as support staff. These people will meet for
8 days (travel included) in Badolato, South of Italy, and they will work intensely towards
implementing a new tool for their daily work within the youth field. On one hand, this
training is about using “Theatre of the oppressed” and “Forum Theatre” and to raise
awareness over the issue of diversity, discrimination, and social exclusion. Theatre of the
oppressed is about offering a constructed, theatrical and interactive space to discuss
oppression imposed by society, and to offer an arsenal of ways out of it. On the other
hand, it is about new age social media (Facebook, Foursquare, Twitter, Instagram and
others) and the spectrum of its opportunities and threatens in the youth field.
The objectives of this project are for participants to:
• acquire skills, knowledge and attitudes related to social inclusion/ exclusion, cultural
diversity etc.
• to deepen the awareness of similarities and differences in social problems and kinds of
oppression in different European countries;
• get familiarized with the tool of “Theatre of the oppressed”
• explore the benefits, weaknesses and opportunities of social media
• use social media as a tool to promote the idea of social inclusion and justice, by applying
a system of e-Theatre of the oppressed
• to increase the sense of common responsibility for the future of their local communities
as well as the whole European community;
• become active citizens and think wider than themselves
• become multipliers of this innovative tool and use it as a means of promoting active
citizenship
The project will address these topics using the non formal education (NFE) methods, such
as ice-breaking games, energisers, workshops, theatre in education, discussions,
brainstorming, presentations, team building activities, group dynamics tools, peer to peer
