Festival Natural Trumpet Ensemble Elisa Koehler, Conductor MEET THE ARTISTS Brian Shaw is Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Jazz Studies at Louisiana State University and is Co-Principal Trumpet of the Dallas Wind Symphony under the direction of Maestro Jerry Junkin. Recognized internationally for his versatility, he is one of the few trumpeters in the world today able to perform the most difficult literature on the valveless Baroque trumpet, classical and 20th Century pieces on the modern trumpet, and just as convincingly improvise a jazz solo or play lead trumpet in a big band. As a Baroque trumpet player, Brian has just recorded a CD titled Virtuoso Concertos for Clarino [available through bshawmusic.com, iTunes, and CD Baby] including works by Michael Haydn, F.X. Richter, and others on period instruments. These works are of a difficulty such that they have been considered unplayable on a Baroque trumpet until very recently. He has also performed on Baroque trumpet throughout North America with the Bach Vespers Orchestra, the Clarion Society, and the Grand Tour Orchestra in New York, the Handel Choir of Baltimore, Houston Ars Lyrica, the Bach Festival Players in Austin, TX, and the Eastman Collegium Musicum. Interested in old and new music alike, Shaw has been the dedicatee of several works for the modern trumpet, most notably including Joseph Turrin’s Two Images (2005). He can also be heard on the premiere recording of John Corigliano’s Circus Maximus with the University of Texas Wind Ensemble, and on the Dallas Wind Symphony's Grammy-Nominated CD "Garden of Dreams." As a jazz trumpeter, he is a new addition to the LSU concert series "Hot Summer Nights and Cool Jazz" along with his colleagues pianist Willis Delony and bassist Bill Grimes, playing to consistently standing-room-only audiences. He has also written two jazz books: a collection of transcribed solos by Kenny Wheeler, published by Universal Edition, and a new method for young students, How to Play Lead Trumpet in a Big Band, published by Advance Music. Brian Shaw has been successful in several international competitions, including first prizes in the 2001 International Trumpet Guild Mock Orchestra Competition, the 2002 ITG Solo Competition, the 1998 National Trumpet Competition Jazz Division, and was the silver medalist in the 2004 Ellsworth Smith Competition. He was a semi- finalist in the 2000 Maurice André competition, in Paris, accompanied by pianist W. David Hobbs. He has performed as a soloist with the Dallas Wind Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Eastman Conductor's Orchestra, Belle Meade Baroque, the Miro Quartet, Alabama Symphony, Acadiana Symphony, LSU Wind Ensemble, LSU Jazz Ensemble, and will be the soloist on the premiere of a new concerto called "Redshift" for trumpet (by LSU faculty member Brett William Dietz) with the Eastman Wind Ensemble in May 2010.
Shaw holds degrees from Eastern Illinois University (B.Mus), the Eastman School (M.Mus) and the University of Texas at Austin (D.M.A.). While at ESM, he was Principal Trumpet of the Eastman Wind Ensemble during the group’s 2004 Far East Tour and the 2005 Carnegie Hall concert. As an arranger, he has recently written works for the Dallas Wind Symphony, and was honored to create a special setting of “The Eyes of Texas” for the University of Texas’ 2008 commencement ceremony in Austin. Brian lives in Baton Rouge with his wife, Paula, and their four-legged furry children: Sally, Toby, Lucky, and Chloe. When he is not playing, teaching, or writing, he enjoys cooking, oil painting, and amateur astronomy.
Bozena Jedrzejczak Brown received her BA in Music Theory from the Frederic Chopin Conservatory of Music in Warsaw, Poland, and her Master’s degree in Harpsichord from the Peabody Institute in Baltimore. An active continuo player in the Baltimore-Washington area, she has performed with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, the Mid-Atlantic Symphony, the Washington Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble and the Orchestra of the 17th Century. She was one of the founding members of the chamber group Stylus Luxurians and appeared as harpsichordist with the Caeciliana Quartet and other ensembles. Bozena teaches harpsichord and basso continuo at the Baltimore School for the Arts and is a piano faculty member at the Garrison Forrest School. The United States Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps is the only unit of its kind in the armed forces. The unit was created in 1960 and is assigned to the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), at Fort Myer, VA. Their distinct uniforms are patterned after those worn by the musicians of General George Washington’s Continental Army, recalling the days when brave patriots forged out freedom. The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps Baroque Trumpet Ensemble is a specialized performance unit within The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps. The ensemble was originally formed in 1986 and then revived again in 2004 as an outlet for professional development. In 2007 the Baroque Trumpet Ensemble replaced its original cavalry trumpets with 3-hole Baroque trumpets expanding the ensemble’s capabilities. For more inform The Kentucky Baroque Trumpets were founded in 2005 by Don Johnson and in 2007 the ensemble won the National Trumpet Competition in the Historic Ensemble Division. The group recreates the sound of the Baroque era using reproductions of natural and baroque trumpets as well as authentic Ehe natural trumpets. They strive to educate the audience about the history of the baroque era, the construction of the trumpet, its playing characteristics, and more. For mo Elisa Koehler is an Assistant Professor of Music at Goucher College as well as the Music Director and Conductor of the Frederick Symphony Orchestra. She earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Orchestral Conducting from the Peabody Institute, a Master’s degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of Tennessee (Knoxville), and Bachelor’s degrees in both Music Education and Performance from Peabody. Her articles have appeared in numerous publications including the Conductors Guild Journal, The Heritage Band Encyclopedia, the International Trumpet Guild Journal, and the New Grove Dictionary of American Music. An active professional trumpeter, Dr. Koehler has performed with the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, and as the solo trumpeter for Baltimore’s Bach Concert Series. She has also performed and recorded on period instruments with the Bach Sinfonia, the Orchestra of the 17th Century, Opera Lafayette, the Handel Choir of Baltimore, and the Washington Kantorei. In August she will be featured as the solo cornetist and conductor of Newberry’s
Victorian Cornet Band at the Vintage Band Festival in Northfield, Minnesota. Full coverage of her recent solo concert tour this past January in Germany (including reviews and concert video) is available on her

This will be the last time I will be able to host the Maryland Early Brass Festival. Over the past five years, it has been a distinct privilege to work with so many wonderful musicians and to share my love of brass history with Goucher and the surrounding community. While my interest in this area of research has increased, so have the number of professional obligations that must be prioritized. It’s hard to admit that we can’t “do it all” – especially when we disappoint others in the process – but it’s much harder to risk lowering standards that in turn provoke a more toxic brand of disappointment. But this is only farewell, not goodbye. The festival will return in the future when it can receive the time and resources it deserves, perhaps in a new format. In the meantime, I want to thank you for coming to tonight’s concert, and I hope you will enjoy the unique character of historic brass instruments. E. Koehler
