MEDICATIONS ALLOWABLE IN PREGNANCY
COLDS
Plain Sudafed for congestion (do not take if you have high blood pressure)
Plain Robitussin, Plain Mucinex or Robitussin DM for cough
Any throat lozenges, Vicks Vapor Rub, and saline nasal spray
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) 650 mg every 4-6 hours for fever, aches, headache and if not working,
may have up to 1000mg every 8 hours, but do not exceed 3,000 mg per day
SEASONAL ALLERGIES
Plain Sudafed first, if doesn’t work, Claritin or Zyrtec
Benadryl or Chlor-Trimeton may also be used on a limited basis, preferably after 15 wks. (Caution
if you have high blood pressure)
CONSTIPATION
Citracel, Benefiber, Metamucil or Fibercon daily (may take regularly for entire pregnancy)
Stool softeners (such as Colace or Surfak) one to two per day for a couple of weeks
If you have had no relief in several days, call nurse for advice
HEMORRHOIDS
Tucks compresses, Preparation H or Anusol Cream
DIARRHEA
Kaopectate or Immodium
HEADACHES
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) 650 mg every 4-6 hrs. as needed and if doesn’t work, may take
1000 mg every 8 hours but do not exceed 3,000 mg per day
*UNEXPLAINABLE HEADACHES FROM 20 WKS. AND ON NOT RELIEVED BY
TYLENOL, CALL NURSE ASAP FOR ADVICE
GAS
Mylicon or Simethicone
HEARTBURN/INDIGESTION
Tums, Maalox or Mylanta; If not working, may try Zantac or Pepcid
INFECTION
Safe antibiotics: Amoxicillin, Ampicillin, Keflex, Augmentin, Zithromax or Z-Pack, Ceftin,
Cephalexin, Erythromycin, Penicillin; (Macrobid and Bactrim up to but NOT after 36 wks)
SLEEP
Tylenol PM or Unisom on a limited basis, Benadryl per directions
NAUSEA AND VOMITING
Half tab of Unisom sleep aid with Vitamin B6 (25 mg) at bedtime and if works, may take this up to
4x’s per day (Caution: may cause drowsiness or dizziness)
Ginger capsules 250 mg 3-4 times per day, B-Natal Pops (no more than 3 per day)
DENTAL WORK
Local anesthesia only; Antibiotics as above
Percocet, Vicodin, Tylenol #3 (on limited basis and must be prescribed by dentist)
If you want to use Motrin, Advil, etc., call nurse for advice
HEAD LICE
Over the counter Rid
CUTS AND SCRAPES
Bacitracin or Neosporin
YEAST INFECTION
Monistat (do NOT use if you have been told you have a placenta previa )
*Medication use during 1st trimester should be avoided if possible*All medication above is to be taken as directed on container.
