Hinesburg elementary/middle school

Elementary Co-Principal Middle School Co-Principal Director of Special Education
August 2013
Dear HCS Families,
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Allegra Miller and I am honored and so
excited to be the interim Elementary Co-Principal at HCS this year. What a great school this is! HCS is
certainly a busy place: summer school, EEE summer program, Part 2, summer library hours, maintenance and
custodial projects, a busy office staff and teachers meeting and working all throughout these summer months
busily getting ready for a new school year. It is evident that HCS is a vibrant learning community!
I am thrilled to be joining HCS and the Hinesburg community, and to be working in a school again. I have been
in education for 32 years: 21 years as a music teacher to students in kindergarten through grade 12, 4 years
as an elementary assistant principal, and then 7 years as the co-principal of Shelburne Community School. In
2012, I left SCS and my career in education to “retire”. As you may conclude, I soon realized that retirement
was not the best choice for me. As a matter of fact, I missed everything about a school--the people, the
celebrations, the problems, the exciting challenges, the laughter, working with families and just being in a place
everyday with professionals who care about children.
We welcome a number of new faculty and staff into our school and also have several teachers moving into
new roles. Ms. McManus will be teaching first grade this year, Mrs. Branch is moving back to kindergarten after
spending a year teaching first grade, Mr. Heney is moving to fifth grade and Mrs. Spaulding is moving to
middle school 7/8 grade social studies. We are happy to welcome Ms. Jessica Jablonski as a middle school
speech and language pathologist and intensive needs case manager, Ms. Lauren Goracy as the long-term
substitute for Mrs. Kihm, Ms. Andi Thibodeau as an intensive needs para educator, and Ms. Sondra Sammut
as the new part time art teacher. A welcome back to Carol Hinsdale who will be teaching a third grade class
after being in China during the 2012-2013 school year. Also joining us in a different capacity is Lizz Lach who
is now our new Part 2 Director. We feel so fortunate to have many wonderful new staff members joining our
school.
One of the things that make HCS so wonderful is the parent and community involvement. We are lucky to have
many talented and dedicated volunteers in our school on a daily and weekly basis. Our parent/teacher group
“PiE” is an active group of parents and teachers who donate many hours of hard work to make our school a
better place for all of us. Please come to the first meeting on Monday 9/10 at 6:00 PM to learn more about this
dynamic group. All meetings are in the HCS flex space with babysitting available.
Mr. O’Hara, Ms. Smith and I are looking forward to working with all of you this year on behalf of your children.
Please let us know if there is anything we can help you with. Enjoy the few remaining weeks of summer-we
can’t wait to get started on a great year!
