Preparation for colonoscopy

One week before the test
Stop all iron tablets eg Fefol, Ferrogradumet , FGF
Stop Iscover, Plavix, Prasugrel, Duocover, Clopidogrel or warfarin (after discussion with your doctor)
Two days before the test
Stop eating brown bread, cereals, muesli and muesli bars, vegetables, fruit and nuts.
You may eat boiled or poached egg, cottage cheese, low fat plain yogurt, white bread, steamed white fish,
boiled chicken, well cooked peeled pumpkin or well cooked peeled potato, clear jelly, skim milk and
clear fluids
One day before the test
Up until 1.00pm –
follow the same diet as above
From 1.00pm until 5.00pm – clear soup – you may have noodles in the soup, no thick soups.
From 5.00pm - clear fluids only, clear soup, black tea, black coffee, water, soft drink or jelly (not red or
green). You are not allowed to eat any solid food and all fluids must be clear.
You must drink as many clear fluids as possible to stay hydrated.
Bowel preparation medication
7pm Add the first bag of picolax powder to 250ml water, chill if desired, then drink completely
over 10 minutes. Have a further two glasses of water over the next hour. • 8pm Mix the contents of the colonlytely powder in 1 litre of water and chill if desired. Flavouring
may be added to the solution if desired and drink over 1 hour. • 9pm Add the second bag of picolax powder to 250ml water, chill if desired, then drink completely
over 10 minutes. Have a further two glasses of water over the next hour. • You must continue drinking clear fluids, at least a glass an hour until bedtime

On the day of the examination
You may continue drinking clear fluids up to 4 hours prior to your procedure and then nothing further.
If you normally take morning medication, take it with a sip of water
Diabetic patients should bring their medications with them
After the procedure
• You are given sedation for this procedure and must arrange for a friend/relative to collect you • Patients are not allowed to travel home alone via taxi.
• Please ask the nursing staff your discharge time on arrival at the ward.
• Also note that for the remainder of the day, do not:
o Drive a car, operate machinery, consume alcohol or sign legal documents • If you are on the oral contraceptive pill, additional contraceptive measures should be taken for 14 consecutive days following this procedure whilst continuing to take your oral contraception.
