*** Victims support groups say the Catholic Church may be
preparing to acknowledge its involvement in child sexual abuse
in Australia… after Cardinal GEORGE PELL apologised to
those who "suffered at the hands" of priests during his
Christmas message.
His apology comes after the federal government’s move to
establish a royal commission into the responses by institutions,
including churches, to child sexual abuse cases.
Bravehearts founder HETTY JOHNSTON says Cardinal PELL's
statement represents a "cultural shift" in the church… as it
comes to terms with the role played by some its clergy.
*** The Attorney-General NICOLA ROXON says her
department did not advise Queensland Labor MP GRAHAM
PERRETT, who's asked the Australian Federal Police to
investigate senior Liberal figures over the PETER SLIPPER
harassment case.
Mr PERRETT last Friday sent a 100-point letter to the AFP,
referring the agency to a Federal Court judgment earlier which
suggested Mr ASHBY may had acted "in combination" with
another SLIPPER staffer KAREN DOANE and former
HOWARD minister MAL BROUGH
In his letter, Mr PERRETT said information in the judgment
indicated there may have been a "political conspiracy designed
to harm" Mr SLIPPER and the federal Labor government.
Asked today if Mr PERRETT had asked her department or any of her staff for advice, Ms ROXON said: "No". *** A woman charged with the murder of missing man DOUGLAS KALLY has fronted court, as sobbing relatives of the victim watched on. 43-year-old ANGELA WILLIAMS, of St Leonards, appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates court today charged with the murder of 48-year-old Mr KALLY. The offence is alleged to have occurred in July 2008 at Indented Head. The Tamil Refugee Council is organising a 9am demonstration outside the MCG on the first day of the Boxing Day Test. The group wants to boycott the Sri Lankan cricket team and raise awareness of human rights violations. *** And asthma sufferers are being advised to check the label number on their inhalers following a faulty batch recall. Several batches of Ventolin and Asmol inhalers are affected by the recall, due to a fault in the delivery mechanism of a small number of inhalers… which can lead to less than the full dose being delivered for each puff. Manufactures estimate about 25 to 50 thousand inhalers are affected by the recall, out of about 900-thousand puffers distributed each month. *** OVERSEAS now, and… Christmas preparations are on hold for thousands of people in the UK as many homes and businesses are swamped with floodwaters. Evacuees will now be spending the Christmas period with relatives or in temporary accommodation. The areas affected begins at Cornwall in the south, extending north to the Scottish highlands as winter rains add to already water-logged land. *** And Russian President VLADIMIR PUTIN has held talks in New Delhi to tighten defence ties and boost trade with India, a traditional ally and one of Russia's top clients for arms sales. PUTIN’s meeting with Indian PM MANMOHAN SINGH had to be moved to a new location, due to violent protests in central New Delhi related to the recent gang-rape of a female student. *** In FINANCE… The Australian share market ended higher during a shortened trading session today in the lead up to Christmas. The ASX 200 closed UP 11.6 points at 4,635. And a short time ago the AUSTRALIAN DOLLAR was buying: 1 dollar and ______ US cents, and ______ BRITISH pence. *** In SPORT… Melbourne Victory midfielder MARK MILLIGAN has been
suspended for the next two A-League matches over an incident
in last weekend's Melbourne derby.
The match review panel has banned MILLIGAN for a jab to the
stomach of Heart rival JONATAN GERMANO.
It is a double blow for the Victory, who have already lost skipper
ADRIAN LAYER (LEIJER) for Friday night's home clash with
Newcastle after he exceeded the yellow card limit.
*** And In-form paceman MITCHELL STARC will be rested
from the Boxing Day Test against Sri Lanka.
