Shenee: I knew I had to get my blood sugar under control. I went to talk to my doctor. Arturo: The doctor said that orals alone were no longer enough. I needed something more. I needed to add insulin to my treatment plan. [Super] The most common side effect of insulin is low blood sugar. Some people may experience symptoms such as shaking, sweating, fast heartbeat, and blurred vision, while some experience no symptoms at all. That’s why it’s important to check your blood sugar often. Shenee: At first, I was afraid. You know, nobody likes needles. The thought of giving myself a shot scared me. Charles: I educated myself on the importance of controlling my blood sugar and how insulin could help me. I talked with my doctor about side effects of insulin such as low blood sugar, which can be serious, and I learned about the importance of checking my blood sugar regularly. Mary Ellen: My doctor helped me get over my fears and incorporate insulin into my daily routine. [Super] Individual results may vary. Arturo: So I added insulin to my treatment plan. Shenee: After several months, my blood sugars went down. I took my insulin, watched what I ate, exercised, and checked my blood sugars. Arturo: I remember thinking, “I should have done this sooner. Why did I wait so long?” Charles: Now, I take my insulin with an insulin pen. I find it easy to use. I like that. Shenee: I’ll say this: you can’t get rid of diabetes, but you can manage it. Mary Ellen: The key to staying in control is balance. I take things one day at a time, one step at a time, and one dose at a time.
