RESEARCH INTERESTS My research interests are multifaceted. My primary line of current research is focused on better understanding the impact of physical activity and sedentary time on childhood obesity. I am an advocate for transdisciplinary research in the field of childhood obesity. My secondary research line is focused on current women’s health issues, particularly integrative cardiovascular regulation in women. Specific areas of interest include: the effects of female sex hormones and exercise on blood pressure regulation, and the effects of sex hormones, exercise, and sedentary time on macrovascular and microvascular endothelial function in women. I started my career as a cardiovascular physiologist and still conduct this line of research, but due to my interest in childhood obesity, I have also begun to study physical activity and sedentary time. Thus far, I have been successful at obtaining grant funding in this area, mastering the research techniques in physical activity assessment, and starting to prepare and submit manuscripts in this field. RESEASRCH SUPPORT Completed Research Support Meendering, J.R. Eugene and Clarissa Evonuk Research Fellowship Grant. Progestins and Vascular Function in Young Women. Overview: The primary aim of this research was to gain a better understanding as to how the progestin MPA used in combination with estradiol influences vascular function of the microcirculation (endothelial function of the cutaneous vasculature). Funding Period: 04/01/06 - 03/01/07 Role: PI Funding: $6,300 Meendering, J.R. Betty Foster McCue Graduate Research Fellowship. Biomarkers of Cardiovascular Disease in Young Women: The Influence of Progestins.
Overview: The primary aim of this research was to gain a better understanding as to how the progestin MPA used in combination with estradiol influences vascular function of the macrocirculation (endothelial function of the brachial artery). Funding Period: 03/01/06 – 03/01/07 Role: PI Funding: $5,000 Meendering, J.R. Northwest Health Foundation Grant. Oral Contraceptives and Vascular Function in Young Women. Overview: The primary aim of this research was (1) to evaluate the effects of combination oral contraceptives containing the progestin desogestrel on endothelial function across an oral contraceptive pill cycle and (2) to evaluate endothelial function under the influence of ethinyl estradiol only to compare with endothelial function with combination oral
contraceptives containing desogestrel + ethinyl estadiol. . Our secondary goal of this study was to determine the effects of desogestrel on other markers of cardiovascular risk such as c-reactive protein, homocysteine, and fibrinogen. Funding Period: 02/01/06 – 02/01/07 Role: PI Funding: $2,400 Meendering, J.R.Center for the Study of Women in Society Grant. Oral Contraceptives and Markers of Vascular Health in Young Women. Overview: The primary aim of this study was to determine the effects of combination oral contraceptives containing the progestin drospirenone on endothelial function across and oral contraceptive pill cycle. These data can then be compared to cyclic fluctuations in endothelial function observed with desogestrel to determine if progestin type influences endothelial function. Our secondary goal of this study was to determine the effects of drospirenone on other markers of cardiovascular risk such as c-reactive protein, homocysteine, and fibrinogen. Funding Period: 03/01/06 – 03/01/07 Role: PI Funding: $2,400 Meendering J.R. American College of Sports Medicine Foundation Grant . Oral Contraceptives and Vascular Function in Young Women. Overview: The primary aim of this research was to evaluate whether the ratio of ethinyl estradiol to desogestrel used in combination monophasic oral contraceptives influences endothelial function across the course of the oral contraceptive cycle (active vs. placebo pill periods).
